White Saviors
Can you still recall the day that decency was shot?
We let them pull the trigger and this is what we got
We had the chance to change the world, but we said "It's not our fight"
We didn't think it could be us, the privileged, young and white
They said they'd put the country first, we thought that might be good
They said they'd stop the violence in the ghetto neighborhood
So we hoped that they'd invest and help the people there to thrive
But instead they built a highway through and buried them alive
Now their souls are lost beneath the dust of history
They skipped over the bulk of it, don't make for good TV
But if you pay attention you can see beneath your feet
Their crumbled, mummified remains in potholes on the street
They said they didn't want our help, and we believed it, too
We pointed all the blame away, we said "It starts with you"
We had the chance to change the world, but we said "It's not our fight"
We didn't think it should be us, the privileged, young and white
They said "If you are one of us, you've got nothing to fear,
But if you don't look like me, then you're not welcome here"
So they rounded up the minor folks and they put them all away
What they did we still don't know, I doubt they'll ever say
The people sought to take the streets to show how much it hurt
But I missed the march because I had to go to work
I guess it's just as well because it did not do no good
Because they rounded up the protesters and shot them where they stood
How did things ever get like this? How did we let them fall?
What's much easier said than done, don't get done at all
We had the chance to change the world, but we said "It's not our fight"
But now we know that it was us, the privileged, young and white
